With her uncle’s death, Vanessa was now alone. Still, after her final year at the Academy for Young Ladies, she could hardly wait to reach Hill House. When she arrived at her destination, she was astonished to discover her guardian residing in her home. If she had considered him at all, she imagined him in the background protecting her interest from afar.
Moreover, her aunt by marriage was apparently in charge of the household. Even worse, her aunt’s relatives were dwelling in the house with her. Why had her guardian allowed such a situation to exist?
